If the pool pump basket is filled with debris then it makes the water flow slower which results in an insufficient turnover rate.

This leads to poor water filtration of your pool.

And as a swimming pool owner, we all know how important it is to regularly filter the pool water so that it remains clean and bacteria free.

When you empty a pool pump basket, it is easy to get a lot of air into the system, leading to an airlock.

As a result, you must exercise extreme caution to avoid allowing air into the system.

In this article I am specifically going to provide my 13 simple steps that you can follow to properly clean your Hayward pool pump basket.

13 Steps to Properly Clean Hayward Pool Pump Basket

Step 1: First thing is you need to turn off your Hayward pool cleaner pump and the Hayward pool heater

If the heater is on, then wait for 5-10 minutes before turning off the pool pump to allow it to cool down.

Step 2: Close the multiport filter to prevent the backflow of water into the pump strainer.

Step 3: Shut down the main drain valve and the skimmer valve.

This prevents air from getting inside the system.

Step 4: Take off the pump lid.

To remove the lid, unscrew it by turning it counter-clockwise.

Step 5: Wash the Hayward Pool Pump Basket with a garden hose to clean out any stuck stuff.

Baskets become brittle and easily break over time, so be careful while cleaning them.

Step 6: Allowing the contents of a basket to completely dry makes cleaning it easier.

The simplest way to complete this task is to have a spare pump basket to rotate with the dirty basket.

Step 7: Examine the pump basket for signs of damage and replace it if necessary.

Some baskets will twist-lock shut.

Here one thing to remember is you need to avoid over tightening the pool pump basket.

Step 8: Inspect the Hayward pool pump lid and pool pump o-ring for cracks or any other damage.

After that, lubricate the o-ring on the pump lid with petroleum jelly if it appears dry to prevent the lid from getting stuck.

Step 9: Now, replace the pump lid and o-ring if the need may arise. Avoid over-tightening.

6 Easy Steps to Clean a Hayward Pool Skimmer Basket

With debris in your skimmer and pump baskets, you will not be able to pull as much water to the pump and filter as much water as if the baskets were clean.

This can have an adverse effect on your swimming pool maintenance.

Therefore, it is essential to clean the Hayward Pool Skimmer Basket at least once a week, if not more frequently.

The skimmer simply skims all the debris off the top of the water and collects it in the basket.

If your pool is surrounded by a kind of vegetation where trees shed a load of leaves, check your basket at least twice per week or as needed.

On the other hand, if your deck has a lot of debris, you should check your basket frequently.

Here are the 6 easy steps you can follow to properly clean your Hayward Pool Skimmer Basket.

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump.

Step 2: Take off the skimmer lid.

Step 3: Scoop some of the debris and leaves out of the way so that the skimmer basket is visible.

Step 4: Remove and empty the skimmer basket.

Step 5: If you find any small debris in the basket, rinse it with water and put the basket in the skimmer.

Step 6: Finally, switch the system back on after you put on the skimmer lid.

How Often Should I Clean My Hayward Pool Pump Basket?

It is easy to understand when you need to clean your Hayward pool pump basket because its lid is completely transparent.

Therefore, when you see debris stuck inside the basket, then just take it out and empty the basket to clean it entirely.

However, I highly recommend that you should clean the pool pump basket at least once every 2-3 months.

This helps to clean out any junk stuck inside the basket and will improve its performance and lifespan as well.

The skimmer doesn’t allow big debris or leaves to get past it.

However, smaller sizes of stuff do get past the skimmer and into the basket, which needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.

4 Simple Steps to Clean Hayward Pool Pump Strainer Basket

The strainer basket is what you call a pool pump basket.

It collects the smallest part of junk.

It is fairly trickier to clean than a skimmer basket.

Here are 4 easy steps to clean Hayward Pool pump strainer basket.

Step 1: For this, you first need to turn the pump off and turn the multivalve in the closed position.

Step 2: Now, remove the lid and take the basket out.

Step 3: Then, you must rinse it with a hose to get rid of anything stuck in the basket.

Step 4: Place it back in the system, shut the lid, and turn the valve on.

How to Open Hayward Pool Pump Basket?

On the top surface of the lid, four curved arrows indicate which direction the lid should be rotated when opening.

It usually points counter-clockwise.

Therefore, you need to twist the lid in the indicated direction.

If that doesn’t work, just tap lightly on the lid until the seal breaks.

After that you can take out the basket and use a hose to pretty much get all the stuck stuff out of the basket.

Here, I recommend to use the hose only when you want to really perform a deep clean.

You don’t really want to bang the basket against any of the pool, pool lines, or anything to take out the dirt because it may crack the basket.

Once the basket is cracked, bigger things can get into your filter.

That’s why you need to be careful while cleaning your pool pump basket.

3 Steps to Follow When Hayward Pool Pump Basket Lid is Stuck

Step 1: You’ve probably tried it before, but give it another shot before moving on.

While holding firmly by the handles or the plastic parts of the lid, twist the lid clockwise.

Step 2: If that doesn’t work, try holding the handle on the left with your left hand.

After that tap or thump the other side of the lid with your right palm to crack the seal.

If it moves, continue tapping until the threads on the lid are completely unsealed.

Step 3: A pool pump lid wrench is the next thing you should try.

A pool pump lid wrench is a lid opener that is attached to the lid of the pump to provide extra grip and leverage while opening the lid.

It is extremely safe to use and you can frequently open a tight lid with the help of this lid wrench.

Pump lids open most of the time but can seldom become stuck.

The following are some of the causes of a tight or stuck pool pump lid:

1. The lid is too tight.

2. Threads are dirty.

3. The lid is cross-threaded.

4. Discarded rubber seal.

You can avoid getting the lid stuck if you follow the below mentioned steps.

6 Steps to Unstuck the Hayward Pool Pump Basket Lid

Step 1: Avoid over tightening of the lid.

Tighten it gently until you can’t go any further, then give it one more 1/4″ turn.

Step 2: Threads should be cleaned.

With the lid removed, clean the threads on the lid and the pump body with a toothbrush.

Step 3: Check for any dirt or debris that has gotten stuck inside the lid.

Step 4: Take care not to over the thread of the lid.

Cross threading occurs when the threads are not properly aligned while the lid is assembled.

If you need to use a lot of force to tighten the lid, you might have cross-threaded it.

In this case, you need to undo it and start over.

Step 5: Replace the rubber seal.

Step 6: Use a Teflon seal lubricant to keep the lid from getting stuck.
